The Miller Center for Recreation and Wellness would like to honor Dennis Landis as our Member of the Month for January 2019. Dennis first joined the Fitness Center in December 2017 and has participated in all of our programs for people with Parkinson’s Disease (Rock Steady Boxing, PW!R Moves and Cycling) since we first started offering them in January 2018.
Dennis shared his story of transformation with us, “When I was first diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, I had been going to physical therapy at both Geisinger and Evangelical Community Hospital. I then worked with a doctor in Hershey, who spent a good amount of time with me to understand my symptoms and help me manage my condition. I heard about the Parkinson’s classes at the Miller Center through a friend and have seen the biggest changes and great results from my participation in those classes. Being a part of the classes is like being a part of a team. You’re missed if you don’t go, and we all work together to support each other in getting stronger and staying active.”
Dennis is also grateful for how the classes are run. “I believe the leadership of these programs has a lot to do with the successful results people are experiencing. Cindy Murphy and Kim Murphy make you feel comfortable. Their sense of caring and concern are second to none. We’re challenged each week to do things we didn’t think we could do, and we see real progress.”
Our trainer, Cindy Murphy, who leads these classes, has also seen improvements in Dennis since he started. “Dennis shows up to every class with a smile on his face and ready to work. He is positive and upbeat and always sheds a little humor with every situation, which is why all his peers and our team of volunteers love him. Dennis is a hard hitter and lays it all out there for every workout. Dennis has been in our classes since almost the beginning, and if he feels like an exercise isn’t challenging him enough, he’ll add a tougher progression and take it to the next level. He is an inspiration to all of us!”
Not only has Dennis been an active “Parkie” member, but with his background in large construction (he started Landis Builders in 1980) not to mention his generous spirit, he thoughtfully built these amazing wooden totes for his fellow Parkies to carry their boxing gear and water bottles to class. And when he saw the need to have something to store the PVC pipes used for the warmups during class, and dollies to stack and transport the chairs, he built and donated that equipment to the center as well.
Dennis and his wife Joan are both members of the Fitness Center and reside in New Columbia. They have four daughters: Chelsea, Courtney, Caitlin and Alexa, three of whom are also members of the Fitness Center. After hosting their daughter Courtney’s wedding at their home in 2012, they ventured to open a new business called The Cypress House (www.thecypresshouse.org) where they host weddings on their picturesque 24-acre property and where Joan’s amazing talents in floral arrangements are put to good use. Dennis shared that Caitlin and Alexa will be getting married this summer, and they have already booked several weddings for 2019, which certainly keeps his family in active event-planning mode! With 15 years of coaching experience in basketball and soccer in the Milton area, Dennis is currently coaching the Lewisburg 8th grade boys’ basketball team. And whenever he can find the time, Dennis enjoys hunting and fishing.
As our honoree, Dennis will receive a $25 gift certificate to our Cornerstone Kitchen, a Miller Center water bottle, and a reserved parking spot. Congratulations, Dennis, on being our January 2019 Member of the Month! We are grateful for your generous donations, and most of all, we’ve enjoyed getting to know you and having you as part of the Parkie and Miller Center family! You are an inspiration to many, and we’re fortunate to support you and work alongside you through your lifelong fitness journey!
