July 2018 Member of the Month

Posted Posted in Miller Center

The Miller Center for Recreation and Wellness would like to honor Marcy Shaeffer as our Member of the Month for July, 2018.

Marcy is not just a member; Marcy is an advocate. Sure, Marcy can be seen checking into the fitness center to stay well, but her real reasons for being here are much more personal. Her countless volunteer hours in our Parkinson’s programs are what really caught the eye of Cindy Murphy, and that’s why she nominated her for Member of the Month.

We asked Marcy why volunteering at The Miller Center is so important to her. “Several years ago, a relative was diagnosed with Parkinson ’s disease. Over the years, I observed his ups and downs with medications, and many changes in physical abilities. His children are extremely concerned about his health, as are many other family members. It’s heartbreaking watching him deal with such a lousy disease.” Marcy adds, “Several months ago, Terry (Stahley) told me how rewarding it was assisting with the Parkinson’s disease class. (I had no idea that the Miller Center offered such a class.) I couldn’t help but wonder if my relative could benefit from such a class. However, I couldn’t really discuss it with him without more information. A few days later, I asked Cindy about the class and immediately volunteered to assist with the next session.”

As for what it’s like to volunteer in a Parkinson’s class at The Miller Center, Marcy remarked, “Volunteering to assist with the PWR!Moves for Parkinson’s Disease classes is a great experience – definitely not a task! I’ve observed improvement in physical abilities, and people willing to try new activities and exercises. Recently, one of the participants commented, “I couldn’t do this exercise a year ago.” Wow, what a powerful statement! Terry was right, volunteering to assist with the Parkinson’s Disease class is very, very rewarding!”

As our honoree, Marcy will receive a $25 gift certificate to our Cornerstone Kitchen, a Miller Center water bottle, and a reserved parking spot. Congratulations, Marcy, on being our July 2018 Member of the Month! We are SO thankful for your membership, volunteer hours and most of all, for your kindness to others.

July 2018 Employee of the Month

Posted Posted in Miller Center

The Miller Center is pleased to announce our July 2018 Employee of the Month, Group Fitness Instructor Heather Baranoski.

Heather Baranoski, is a group fitness instructor certified in teaching a variety of classes to meet one’s fitness needs. Heather brings with her a diverse professional background.  In her past, she has worked with cardiac rehabilitation patients, residents of a senior living community, at-risk youth and community health populations. As a certified wellness coach, she provides a multi-dimensional approach to health and wellness with an emphasis on the enjoyment of the experience. “Smiling through my class is key, as it convinces your brain that you are having fun-regardless of what your body is telling you”.

While Heather is certainly known for her work as a Group Fitness Instructor here at The Miller Center, she’s involved in a lot more than that. Heather is passionate about her senior class members, pitches in around the Center whenever and wherever she can, and lately has been helping Director of Fitness Operations Robin Barth with class coordination and planning.

When she is not working at the Miller Center, Heather is also an assistant Varsity Girls Soccer Coach for the Muncy High School Indians. Heather lives with her husband Matt, daughter Lexi and dog Callie.

Rock Steady Boxing at The Miller Center

Posted 1 CommentPosted in Miller Center

Rock Steady Boxing is coming to The Miller Center! A generous $5,167 gift from Senior Helpers of Sunbury makes this the first program in the region of its kind, which helps sufferers of Parkinson’s disease by improving their quality of life through a non-contact boxing based fitness curriculum. The first class will be on July 10, 2018.

Bobbi Emanuel, owner of Senior Helpers, said, “When I visited The Miller Center, I noticed that many people inside the organization had been personally touched by Parkinson’s disease. It’s very rare to find an agency where everyone, from the board, to staff members, to volunteers, have the heart and drive to help those with Parkinson’s. In the case of The Miller Center, it extends throughout the entire team. That brings a compassion and empathy that can’t be taught.”

Emanuel, who operates the Sunbury-based location with co-owner John Emanuel, says they provide varying levels of care to elderly clients in the surrounding 5-county area. She elaborated on what this program means to Senior Helpers caregivers, clients and leadership. “The number one thing this brings to us is the opportunity to touch more people. We were told one member drives an hour and a half to come to the Miller Center to participate in a Parkinson’s class because there is nothing like this close to his home. The more we can help educate volunteers, family, professional caregivers, and most of all, the general community, the better it will be. 60,000 people are diagnosed with Parkinson’s every year. Like most neurodegenerative diseases, Parkinson’s Disease effects everyone associated with the person who has the disease. Through our work with the Miller Center, we hope to assist with education and support all involved.”

Cindy Murphy, Rock Steady Boxing certified instructor, added “I’m so honored and grateful for this gift from Senior Helpers. Their generosity will enable us to purchase equipment needed to offer Rock Steady Boxing classes and allow me to pursue my dream of bringing hope to those in our community who suffer from Parkinson’s. I have already seen the health benefits that our PWR!Moves for Parkinson’s classes have had on those participating. I’ve also witnessed the comradery, encouragement and new friendships built among the participants as well as their caregivers. Adding Rock Steady Boxing will give people with Parkinson’s another exercise option to choose from.”

A special media event will take place at 9 AM on July 10, 2018 just before the inaugural class kicks off at 10 AM. Interviews, photo opportunities and demonstrations will take place. RSVP for the July 10 media event to drew.kelly@millerrec.org.

American Red Cross Blood Drive

Donate blood and help save lives!

When: Thursday, August 2nd at 10:00 AM-3:00 PM at The Miller Center on Court 1.

F.A.Qs

Who can donate?

Individuals who are 17 years of age or older, meet weight and height requirements (110 pounds or more) and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood.

How long does it take?

When appointments are made in advance, the process takes about an hour. The actual donation takes about eight to 10 minutes. The actual donation time for a double red cell donation is slightly longer and takes about an hour and a half from start to finish. Time is needed for registration, a mini-physical and health history interview, and refreshments following your donation.

How much blood is taken?

For blood donations, a little less than a pint of blood is drawn. Your body will replace the fluid loss in about 24 hours. Red blood cell replacement will begin immediately but will take place four to six weeks for completion.

How will I feel after donating?

Most people feel just fine. Eating a balanced meal and drinking plenty of fluids before your donation, thinking positively about your donation and knowing what to expect will all help. Regular activity can be resumed following the donation, although you should avoid heavy lifting for the remainder of the day.

For more information, contact Emily Long at emily.long@millerrec.org or call The Miller Center at (570)556-4191.

Partnering with three non-profit community based organizations; like the United States Field Hockey Association, Buffalo Valley Recreation Authority and now the Miller Center for Recreation and Wellness allows us to serve the community through the sport that we love.” Cook said.

North Union United Soccer Club will also be hosting a sanctioned league, tournament and clinics for coaches and players. The sanctioned league will be operating as the Tri-County Futsal League this winter. Games will be played from November to February. Tournaments will be held in the new year. The league is accepting new teams at www.nuunited.com/futsal. The president of NUU, Darsh Bhangdia, said, “NUU is proud to announce a partnership with the Miller Center to bring futsal to the area. Futsal is fast paced soccer on a hard court with a small ball that encourages foot skills and passing. It is a

wonderful opportunity to develop skills and have fun.  It is open to all NUU teams in addition to the surrounding town teams and clubs. It will begin in November and run through the end of January”.
